Libraries of the Department of Oriental Studies
- Departmental library (focal areas of the collection: Islamic studies, Arabic studies, Iranian studies, and Turkish studies) with approx. 25,000 volumes.
- Malayan studies collection (focal area: modern Indonesian literature, classical Malayan literature, literatures of the Austronesian languages, Islam in Southeast Asia) with approx. 14,000 volumes as well as approx. 80 journals. Besides journals and books, the library also has a collection of digital and audiovisual media, including digitized manuscripts, CD-ROMs, audio CDs, language cassettes, as well as documentary and feature films from and about Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.
- Shia library, one of the largest European collections of classical and modern research on Shia Islam with approx. 11,000 volumes. Its holdings have been collected since 1949, with many works coming from private libraries in Iran in the 1960s and 1970s thanks to Prof. A. Falaturi. Old, out-of-print lithographic editions as well as Usul works and fatwa collections are especially valuable and rare. In 1996, a six-volume catalogue of this collection was published with the support of the University and City Library Cologne (USB). A digital catalogue of the Shia library holdings is planned for the near future. Since 2013, important Arabic works from Iraq have been added to the library's holdings.
- Library of the Max Freiherr von Oppenheim foundation with currently approx. 3,500 volumes.
- Collection of the Max Freiherr von Oppenheim foundation, consisting of a) 353 manuscripts (Arabic, Persian, Ottoman); b) 137 objects (writing utensils, coins, paintings, vessels, etc.); c) map collection, art prints, graphic art, postcards, and photos.
- Manuscript collection of the Department of Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian Studies, consisting of 257 manuscripts (Arabic and Persian).
